When you look at a sauna, you're really looking at the timber. It's what you see, touch and smell every session, and it's what has to handle heat, steam and moisture year after year. That's why every Tasman Saunas build uses full length timber staves: no joints, no glue, just genuine treated timber from end to end.
What is a full length stave?
A full length stave is a single, continuous piece of timber running the entire length of the sauna. There are no finger joints, no offcuts stitched together and no laminated sections. One piece of wood does the whole job.
Why we skip joined timber
Joined and glued timber is common because it lets manufacturers use shorter offcuts and reduce waste. It's a cost saving for the maker, and we don't think it belongs in a sauna.
- Fewer weak points. A sauna swings between dry heat and steam. Every joint and glue line is a place where movement and wear can show up over time. A single stave has none.
- A cleaner, more natural look. With no join lines, the grain runs uninterrupted from one end to the other.
- No glue in your sauna. You're breathing warm air in a small, enclosed room. We'd rather that room be made of timber and nothing else.
- Honest build quality. If it's not built with shortcuts, it doesn't need to hide them.
Yes, you'll see knots
Real timber has knots, and some of our staves show them. We think that's a good thing. Knots are proof that the wood is genuine and not engineered or patched together to look perfect. They add character and give each sauna its own personality, which no two builds share.

Built properly, or not at all
Full length staves cost more to source and take more care to work with. We accept that, because a sauna is a long-term investment in your home and your wellbeing. If we wouldn't want it in our own backyard, it doesn't go out the door.
